Film Thoughts: Amrapali (1966, Hindi)

[Composed Feb. 2007]
I recently bought this on nehaflix and watched it last night, though I wasn't in the mood for all the testosterone-filled actiony stuff so I skipped through those parts while still getting the general idea of the storyline. What struck me in this film was how beautiful Vyjayanthimala is! Throughout the entire movie she is decked out in beautiful jewelry from head to toe (and the head must be emphasized because this is '60s Bollywood, after all!). She wears revealing yet tasteful outfits and just looks great! Check out these screencaps I took tonight:

Throughout the film I found myself just admiring her sky-high hair filled with baubles and jewels and strings and pearls as well as all the other lovely adornments.

And then there is her dancing! Excellent! She executes her moves with such precision and crispness, it is astonishing. I finally figured out how to play DVDs frame by frame tonight and just watching her in slow motion is exhausting!

In sum, though I didn't follow the story with exactness, I agree with filmifan at BollyWhat.com that the film has many similarities to Asoka (battle sequences, giving up revenge and murder for Buddhist ideals, etc.). But the movie can be enjoyed simply by watching the graceful and charming Vyjayanthimala, which I highly recommend! :)
