Ugh. Rented this one mostly to see Sneha/Tabu, and it is terrible with a huge capital T. I actually fast-forwarded through almost all of it, catching dialogues here and there. The makeup is obvious and overdone, the colors and sets gaudy and tacky, and the sexual innuendo overwhelms the film. The sexy stuff is overbearing and not in any way sensual- the characters have no chemistry and just look like they are plodding along trying to do what stupid things are required of them by the script. I just cringed through most of it. It is painful! There is even a few seconds in the Premavalambanam song where Tabu looks completely uncomfortable and grossed out by Mr. McNasty BalaKrishna. Ah, yes, Mr. McNasty. This man is so revolting to me in this film, I could hardly watch him! With his cake-makeup face, badly-attached wig, and gross-out womaniser-ness, I really couldn't stand to look at him.
Surprisingly, I really didn't think Tabu looked all that beautiful in this film. There were a few shots that were flattering, but most of the time she looked sort of tired and older than the character she was portraying. And the outfits often didn't suit her. And then we get to Sneha. She is the only thing worth watching in this film. Looking radiant and so sunny, she was the only one who didn't seem to be "acting." I thought she did a commendable job. But overall? This film stinks!
Screencaps of Tabu:

Hey, Minai, this is the erstwhile wannabe from Bollywhat. I don't know why you wanted to watch this film. It was widely and rudely condemned by just about everyone in Andhra Pradesh when it released. Would you believe this is a remake of the original NTR's very famous movie called Panduranga Mahatyam, which is actually a story of religious devotion? I'm really commenting here to recommend that you watch that to wash out the taste of this horrible remake (even if I am almost a year late!)
ReplyDeleteWhy hello wannabe! I certainly remember you! :) Unfortunately, I chose to watch this film back in my "I will watch Tabu in anything and she can do no wrong" phase, which of course has changed as I've seen some really crappy Tabu movies, this one being one of them! It's hard for me to understand what the director was trying to "do" by remaking a devotional film so raunchily. Will put Panduranga Mahatyam on the potential oldies watch list. Thanks for the comment, do stop by again! Long time no talk!! :)
